ENTREPRENEURS FORUM ~ An Interview with SHELIKA SOKOWONCI CEO Bee'sTreats Confectioneries.

I'm Blessing Sokowoncin Shelika, I am from Bassa LGA of Kogi state. I'm a Nigerian and I live in Abuja

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
Due to the nature of my dad's job which involved lots of moving I attended different secondary schools. I attended JEFAP International School suleja, Bishop James Yisa Memorial School Suleja and rounded up my secondary school education at Abuja International Academy, Maraba in 2010. I graduated from Kogi State University in 2015.

WHAT DO YOU DO?
I'm a baker.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU INTO YOUR CURRENT BUSINESS.
I've always had flair for cooking and baking so I just gave in to my passion. Another inspiration was my desire to be independent. After my NYSC I didn't want to keep relying on my parents so I decided to turn my passion into a business.

DOES IT IN ANYWAY RELATE TO YOUR EDUCATION
No it doesn't. Although some knowledge of communication has been helpful..

WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST INSPIRATION?
The desire to be the best I can be has always been a motivating factor.

WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES YOU ARE FACING?
As a start-up, we still have some equipments to buy, trainings to attend and all so one challenge for now is finance but gradually we're getting some of the things we need so with time things would be better.

WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST SETBACK YOU EVER EXPERIENCED
Hmmm. I remember when I first started out I made this very nice cake for a client and  got a call from her sister telling me the middle of the cake was half baked so they couldn't use it. Thankfully she was a very understanding person who knew i was just starting out so instead of getting angry she encouraged me telling me i can be better. She has been a loyal client since then. This might seem like a minor thing but I remember feeling like a total failure. I actually didn't agree to take and orders for about a month because I was scared.

HOW DID YOU RECOVER FROM IT?
I told myself I couldn't give up when I just barely started so I learnt more and paid more attention to every cake I make. This was an amazing moment for me because I had the option of quitting or trying again and I refused to quit.

WHAT ARE YOUR GREATEST ACHIEVEMENTS SO FAR?
I've been able to register my business and looking back I can see that I've really come a long way. I've improved also impoved a lot however, the greatest achievement for me is finally letting go of fear and taking conscious steps to bring to reality all I've penned down and dreamt of achieving.

WHO IS YOUR ROLE MODEL IN BUSINESS?
Yolanda Gampp

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP GOALS
My number one goal is to make impact. Asides baking I want to make impact in the lives of others in any way I can.
Another business goal is to have branches of my business doing well within and outside the shores of Africa.

DO YOU BELIEVE IN GIVING BACK TO THE SOCIETY?
Yes I do.

ADVICE TO OTHER ENTREPRENEURS
Be proud of every step you've taken. It's easy to get distracted and try to feel you've not achieved much compared to others but always remember that everyone started somewhere. That successful entrepreneur you admire was once like you (if not worse). Just keep on pushing, be consistent and dedicated and with time you'll be at the top.
